Equilibrium Ritual

Kinetic balance device, steelyard, stone, pine, rope, scale, gold foil, 2025

Several sets of traditional long-beam scales are suspended among the woods. On the left side of each scale, small stone Mani piles are placed, while on the right side, natural forest elements such as pinecones and pine branches serve as counterweights to balance the Mani piles. Through repeated adjustments of the natural objects‘ weight, the scales eventually reach a delicate state of equilibrium. The work explores the Tibetan philosophy of ”symbiosis between humans and nature.“ The Mani piles, as symbolic representations of human spirituality, engage in a dialogue with the untamed wildness of pinecones and branches: only when the weight of human faith (left) and the vitality of nature (right) are in balance can true harmony be achieved.

Potatso Art Residency

During my residency research in Potatso, I noticed that, because of the region’s Tibetan Buddhist traditions, there are many mani stone piles scattered throughout Potatso and its surrounding areas. These carefully stacked stones are balanced like small pyramids. Originally used as markers or protective objects, they gradually evolved into structures for offering and prayer. Each stone represents the recitation of a scripture, becoming a material expression of merit accumulated by believers.

What impressed me was not only the deep spiritual devotion of the Potatso region, but also the exceptional state of its forests. Local people protect the natural environment with great care and live in harmony with the beings of the forest, creating a rare balance between belief and nature. For this reason, all the materials used in this work were sourced locally: six steelyards were purchased at a local market; the stones for the mani pile were collected from forest streams and the Niru area; and the pinecones and branches were gathered from the primeval forests of Potatso.

EXHIBITION IN THE FOREST

A chipmunk living in a tree near the exhibition site loved to join in the fun. For the artwork was a balancing structure, the little fella really enjoyed swinging on it.
